In order to get the citizenship, first you must prove that you speak very good English at least in a level that others can clearly understand. You need to apply for a permanent residency which gives you the permission to live and work in Canada. To become a permanent residence, you have to stay at least five years without stepping out of the country to apply for a citizenship. It’s a really hard process and I had friends which were from Turkey who try to get into this process but they failed. Although they emphasize Canada as a welcoming and multicultural country, it’s really hard for a Turkish person to get a citizenship when it’s compared to a French or Spanish person because the people who makes the decisions in the committee may be prejudiced and may have overwhelming thoughts about Turkish people as far as I concern. But there is a small Turkish community in the city and my family’s friends were also there. It was really interesting witnessing Turkish food in the middle of Canada. All the Turks I’ve been met with over there were really helping and nice people, I have to admit it.
